Meeting Professor WHO & Dr Michael Arthur

Today, when I was chatting with shieling in the caffe room, Professor who suddenly popped in. I have met him couple of times in the corridor but never had a word. This time within such a close space we started to have a first time conversation. Professor who was very nice, and kind to talk to. Surprisingly he is a shanghaiese but has been living in UK for more than 20 years! So, the brief CV of Professor who is as following: born in shanghai, did PHD decades ago in Cambridge university (very proud ), worked as a research and lecturer in Queen's university and recent years became professor~ He specilized in catalyst chemistry.

I wanted to talk to him in shanghai dialect but our converation was in english all the time.

Dr Michael Arthur is 55 years old, very senior lecturer in chemistry. He got his PHD in Queen's university when he was only 25 years old. Afterwards, he has been working in industries and universities all over the UK until recently more than 20 chemistry departments closing down in UK universities. To maintain his pension, he needed a position and therefore, he now works as a technician in our lab.

I had a lot of conversation with him. Apparently he is very experienced and knowledgeable in general chemistry. He is capable of training and supervision but I guess it must be a bit strange feeling for him as now he is a technician. He wondered whether people thought he is old for the research job. I told him BP must appreciate some one like him because his experience would be very valuable. So, I always asked him some questions and this made him happy. Somehow, after a period of time, I found him talked a lot that was totally irrelevant to my question, and of course he repeated. But still, I listen.

Yesterday, he asked me whether I had seen a llama? My first reaction was that: our tibet monk came to Ireland? Then he continued that during the weekend he went somewhere to see llama. One is brown and the other is white! I stared at him, completely panic!! Later on, he explained that llama is one kind of camel but not human~ OK, fine. Today he was very pleased to bring his USB disk to show me the picture of brown and white llama!! Being polite, I watched it with some little discussion. He said:" you probably want to save these pictures.." OK, I saved it.

Before his leaving today, Dr. arthur turned to me:" Do you like Meerkat?" Honestly, not again! I did not know what was that creature so I told him I liked persioncat but never heard of Meerkat! He smiled and said I would bring you some pictures of them tomorrow. They are very beautiful mammal in south africa!

    What Gender Is Your Brain?

    前一阵看到冰冰的心理年龄鉴定篇,自己也蠢蠢欲动的鉴定了一番!今日,又瞧见一个测定大脑性别的,测试下来,让我好不得意.

Last time, I saw a test of analyzing psychologic age from my friend's blog. I was inquisitive to have the test. Today again, I saw another test which was to determine our brain's gender. Having the result, I was much satisfied.

Your Brain is 73% Female, 27% Male

    Your brain leans female
You think with your heart, not your head
Sweet and considerate, you are a giver
But you're tough enough not to let anyone take advantage of you!

Here is the address for this fun: http://www.blogthings.com/whatgenderisyourbrainquiz/

    Let me know your result

    Some random talks

Why chinese like to stay together?

Since I came to Queen's, I found our chemical research team has people from every continent except arctic. One day, Russian girl Natalie asked me:" Why Chinese people like to stay together closely?" I said perhaps we are shy and not confident enough to express in English? Immediately, I noticed every one surrounding was interested in our conversation. She continued:" Did you notice there is a group of chinese people doing computational chemistry here? They used to have Chinese Dr who, and now he is Professor who. It is like a parcel sent from china to Queen's university you know..They are only Chinese, and chinese language... " I could not help myself laughing and told her possibly there would be a parcel from Russia and we would get a bunch of russian here! Frankly speaking, Natalie is a very funny girl but the question she mentioned which I had been asked many times. My own thought is that originally chinese people are not as individual as westerners, and being with the same nationality here definitely make us feel much secure and easy.

    Who is worse?

This is a story happened long time ago. Now when I recall my memory, I feel much fun and sarcasm from that conversation.

That time I just knew my friend Ying who was next door office to me. Once we two were chatting in the corridor(of course in chinese). She was biting an apple and asked me:" How are these Guizi in your office?" Guizi, if translate directly, means devil. However, it is just kind of slang language and saying. I was perplexed and confused for a moment and replied seriously:" Our office does not have any Japanese." She stopped biting and looked at me at a loss...Then I woke up and said to her:" Oh, terrible you!"

After a while, when I was back to office, I looked at my "lovely innocent" colleagues and all of a sudden I felt terribly funny! What was that conversation?
